The nation’s capitol is home to a very robust community of entrepreneurs, engineers, developers, designers, technologists and, of course, a lot of startups. In fact, D.C.’s tech scene is one of the best in the world (or the very best, depending on who you ask).
Since the community is so active, so supportive, and so enthusiastic, it often seems like all of the startups are doing well. But the fact is, even under the best of circumstances, the statistical likelihood of massive success for startups is a fairly remote possibility, even in #dctech.
To check-up on the relative health of DC startups, I decided to see how the companies are doing. There are lots of hard ways to investigate, but there are some accessible ways too, and evaluating web traffic is one of them. Although far from perfect, the Alexa ranking is a powerful tool for discovering which startups are receiving the most traffic. In Alexa land, a low numerical ranking indicates popularity by comparison to other websites, which can be an accessible proxy of how interesting the company and/or its offering are to the world.
For my experiment, I consulted the most thorough (but, unfortunately, still not exhaustive) list of D.C. Startups, which is maintained on Proudly Made in D.C. Then, I checked the Alexa rankings for all 166 of the startups listed there and found that there are clearly outliers in the community in terms of high-volume web traffic. Whether it be because of an excellent offering, powerful marketing, or by sheer dint of force, these startups are clearly doing something right when it comes to attracting attention:
