The Big Revolt: Is a Tweet Uprising in the Cards?

Things that won’t be happening anytime soon:

  1. The Spinnakr team having any kind of social life
  2. Or successful relationships
  3. A twitter uprising because of in-stream advertising

The introduction of in-stream advertising (Forced! about topics I don’t even like or want!) is a bunch of b.s.  I’m personally very irritated that some of my potential followers will be scared off;  I’m irritated that  instead of great content I’ll be getting ads for whitening strips and carpet cleaner.

But what difference would complaining make? None.

And furthermore, am I going to stop using Twitter? No.

Big brands, small business owners, and individuals know that Facebook and Twitter are the best advertising venues online. Nothing short of the apocalypse and literal bankruptcy would keep them off these sites.  It’ll get interesting, though, when the in-stream advertisements are competitors to the companies’ page.   That seems crazy, but is Twitter going to allow anyone to opt-out?

Most likely, in-stream ads will be akin to the Facebook changes that roll out every 6 months or so. People generally hate them, complain, nothing happens, and complaining subsides.  At least in the near term, I don’t anticipate any effect on the total user count of Twitter.  I can’t imagine the clickthru rates will be that great

(IN FACT, WHY DONT WE ALL CLICK ON THE ADS AND THEN NOT BUY ANYTHING? mwahahahahahaha)

and eventually, hopefully, someone will invent an ‘in-stream ad blocker’ in response.

Another task for the dedicated (hardworking, good looking, fantastic) Spinnakr team? Could be…
